Thangamagan Movie Review - a Dhanush Show all the Way

Thangamagan Movie Review

Thangamagan by Director Velraj was praised as one of the most anticipated films because it was the same team that gave the successful Velai Illa Pattathari.

The cast and crew worked in unison to churn out another entertainer. While VIP had an amazing timing talking about Engineers when the state needed it much, Thangamagan is a completely different fare.

Quick Glance

What's great?

  • • Dhanush's ease of acting and natural dialog deliveries

  • • Samantha in a de-glamorized role and Amy Jackson

  • • Sathish's comical one liners

  • • Anirudh's songs are decent

  • • Cinematograhy and close to life portrayal of characters

What's not?

  • • Boring second half with hardly anything called a story

  • • Anirudh's background music is loud and annoying

  • • Misses the magic that VIP had

Dhanush is Tamizh as shown in the trailers. He loves Amy Jackson, breaks up and then marries Samantha. But, problems come up when his father commits suicide following a fake complaint on him.

The Cast

While the first half of the movie is highly predictable, Dhanush and Sathish manage to keep us engaged throughout the first hour. Director Velraj had missed to weave an actual storyline which was there in his earlier film with Dhanush. In Thangamagan, they rather roam from one place to another. Scenes stay at the same spot in the second half which leaves bitter memories among audience.

Punch dialogs should have been avoided as it just irritates. It is the comedy in the first half and amazing cinematography combined with some songs that save the movie as a whole but not to its best. Anirudh's background score is another thing which has to be checked as he no longer has the magic of '3' or 'VIP'. The 2-hour run time saves the film from turning out bad.

Bottom line - VIP magic is missing in Thangamagan!
