With theatres shut and lockdown on following corona outbreak, the news of Amazon Prime reportedly acquiring right to directly release Ponmagal Vandhal starring Jyothika has brought cheer to producers while theatre owners are up in arms.
There are reports that talks are on to buy five films by the OTT players which include a biggie soon. Even producers like J Sathish Kumar, Kalaipuli S Thanu among others supported the move to release small and medium budget movies in OTT.
When asked, a prominent producer in Tamil cinema, says, ‘I am not sure whether there would be a hike in a number of movies being brought by them. The various television channels are repeatedly airing movies bought by them until recently. Also, OTT platforms are an added source of income for us and it is no alternative to theatrical or even satellite’.
On opposition by theatre owners, another producer says, ‘ A producer who has invested his money, has all the right to exploit his film in every possible way by selling the rights available for his film, to recover his investment so that he or she can continue in the film business.’
